Victorian Corset Workshops

This is a hands on sewing workshop in which students learn to fit and construct a historically accurate Victorian corset, however, the techniques, materials, and skills learned apply to other corset styles and boned garments.

Topics covered during the workshop include:

  • Coutil, linings, and fashion fabric choices
  • Busks and boning, from whale bone to spring steel
  • Fitting and construction techniques
  • Flossing and trimming
  • Lacing, wearing, and caring for a corset

All necessary materials - fabric, pattern, and hardware - are included in the workshop fee and professional tools are available for student use. Students should have solid intermediate sewing skills and be comfortable using their sewing machine.

Student supply list:

  • Sewing machine with bobbin, regular and zipper foot, in good working order
  • Size 14 or 16 machine needles, bring extras
  • Tracing paper and tape
  • Some method of marking fabric ’Äì pen, pencil, chalk, or wheel and marking paper
  • Thread, scissors (both fabric and paper), pins
  • Basic sewing supplies including hand sewing needles
  • Thread to match your fabric
